Questions about Lean Living

Short answers first. If one is missing, the audiobook probably answers it better.

What is Lean Living about?

Lean Living is Joris van Huët's autobiography, told as a series of experiments. It follows his life from a confused multilingual child in a London kindergarten to a successful entrepreneur, and turns those experiences into a systematic approach to designing your own life experiments. Its core idea: navigate life through behavioural science, strategic experimentation and the art of distinguishing contributions from distractions.

Who wrote Lean Living?

Joris van Huët. Born in Paris, raised in London, now based in Utrecht in the Netherlands. He is the founder and CEO of Causality Engine, a causal marketing attribution company, and spent more than fourteen years in European programmatic advertising and growth before that.

How long is the Lean Living audiobook?

3 hours 2 minutes. It has an introduction, 14 chapters and a conclusion. The shortest is the introduction at 4 min 11 sec. The longest is Chapter 3, "Netherlands transition", at 14 min 50 sec.

Where can I listen to Lean Living?

On Spotify. That is the only place it is available right now. You can play the free sample on this site, or open the full audiobook at https://open.spotify.com/show/3cCA9PQ7WNwFQ2hoDnLwT9.

Is there a free sample?

Yes. Spotify has a free sample of 5 min 43 sec. You can play it from the player on the home page of leanliving.ink.

Who narrates the audiobook?

A synthetic voice called Digital Voice Jason. The listing says so plainly, and so do we: the words are Joris's, the voice is digital.

What is the Contribution vs. Distraction framework?

It is the lens Lean Living uses on every experience. First you name your North Star. Then you ask of any activity: is it a contribution (it advances the North Star, builds relevant skills, creates valuable connections or provides essential learning), a distraction (it consumes time and energy without advancing your purpose), or mixed (parts of both, to be separated)? The book promises to run every experience in the memoir through this lens, from childhood translation duty to getting scammed by a con artist.

What are the four pillars of lean living?

External checking (evaluating others and being the good vibe yourself, the "vibe check"), external experience (learning from the world by systematically expanding your discomfort zone), direct environment (gauging and optimising your surroundings for growth) and self-reflection (internal tracking and truthful identity assessment).

Which behavioural science ideas does Lean Living draw on?

BJ Fogg's Behavior Model, Yu-kai Chou's Octalysis framework, Gary Keller's The ONE Thing, Eric Ries's The Lean Startup and Robert Cialdini's Influence. The book uses them as lenses on lived experience rather than as theory chapters.

Is Lean Living a true story?

Yes. The introduction says it plainly: every story in the book is true, and the mistakes and ethical dilemmas are not sugar-coated. That includes getting scammed by a con artist (Chapter 11).

Is Lean Living a diet or fitness book?

No. Despite the name, it has nothing to do with weight loss or body composition. "Lean" here means cutting distractions and keeping what contributes: in work, relationships and decisions.

Is Lean Living a self-help book?

It is an autobiography first. In the book's own words, the philosophy came "not through business school or self-help books, but through a lifetime of unconscious experimentation." The practical part, a systematic approach to designing your own life experiments, grows out of the story rather than replacing it.

When was Lean Living released?

The audiobook was published on Spotify on 18 August 2025.

Is there an ebook or paperback edition?

Not at the moment. Lean Living is currently available as an audiobook on Spotify.

What will I learn from Lean Living?

How to tell strategic detours from random wandering; why your environment and social circle matter more than you think; how to extract learning from any experience, failures included; how to reflect systematically without analysis paralysis; how to build authentic relationships with healthy boundaries; why ethical business is strategically smart; and how to make confident decisions under uncertainty by trusting the process.
